On Wednesday May 7 at Slippery Rock University for a student performance of “Lyrics and Laughter from Shanghai: A Relevant Cabaret with Historical Commentary.” The performance will take place at 6:00 PM (EST) in the Stoner Black Box Theater.Â
This play follows one of many stories following Jews who fled Nazi persecution and found refuge in Shanghai, China. Kari-Anne Innes, the play’s director alongside Kevin Ostoyich, states in the program: “Specifically, the play is a revisal of social worker and amateur comedian Gerhard Gottschalk’s farewell performance of Life of a Schlemiel, a cabaret he performed frequently during his time in Shanghai.”
